Lessons Scale90 Members Can Implement

Costco’s scale cannot be copied directly, but many of the operating principles behind its growth can be adapted by smaller businesses.

10 Practical Lessons

Build recurring value before recurring billing — Use memberships, retainers, subscriptions, or care plans only when customers receive clear ongoing value.
Curate the offer — Focus on the products or services with the strongest demand, margin, and customer outcomes.
Concentrate vendor relationships — Reduce unnecessary fragmentation and consolidate volume where it improves economics and resilience.
Create an exclusive advantage — Build a proprietary package, bundle, method, private-label product, or service experience competitors cannot directly price-match.
Measure lifetime economics — Track repeat purchase, renewal, retention, churn, and lifetime value alongside transaction margin.
Use complementary services to strengthen the core — Add services that increase the usefulness of the main offer rather than unrelated side businesses.
Simplify operations before scaling — Reduce unnecessary handoffs, approvals, exceptions, and process variation.
Treat workforce stability as an operating metric — Track retention, training time, productivity, and internal development.
Build a retention system — Create renewal, reactivation, feedback, and service-recovery workflows in the CRM.
Scale the system, not the chaos — Do not increase volume until fulfillment, quality controls, data capture, ownership, and escalation paths are repeatable.

What Smaller Businesses Should Not Copy

Ultra-low margins without equivalent purchasing leverage
Large inventory commitments that create unnecessary cash-flow risk
Large facilities or international expansion before unit economics are proven
Paid memberships without clear recurring customer value
Complex side businesses that distract from the core offer
